A New Earth, by Eckhart Tolle

(Oprah’s latest pick!)

Contends that humanity has an unprecedented opportunity to shift from its dangerous, ego-based state of consciousness to a saner, more loving existence, and offers practical advice on how to promote kindness and freedom. Explaining that the current state of humanity is erroneously and dangerously ego-centric, an argument for a shift in consciousness reveals how the modern world can become more sane and loving, in a spiritual exploration that offers practical advice on how to promote kindness, freedom, and a realization of humanity’s potential

The Gathering, by Anne Enright

The nine surviving children of the Hegarty clan gather in Dublin for the wake of their wayward brother, Liam, who drowned in the sea, including his sister Veronica, who had shared with him the secret of what had happened to him as a boy in his grandmother’s house, in a novel about betrayal and redemption across three generations. Original.

A PAIR OF PAGE TURNERS

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

Our two dedicated and voracious reader, ah…and they are anonymous for now…have read their first selection and given us their review.

The Children of Willesden Lane, by Nona Golabek and Lee Cohen.

“During the tumultuous years of Hitler’s pre-war regime, 10,000 Jewish children were allowed to leave Germany and Austria on the Kindertransport to sponsors in England. Families were separated so that some children might survive.

Lisa, a child prodigy on the piano at age 14, was sent on the perilous journey from Vienna to England on the Kindertransport.

While addressing the horrors and atrocities against Jews, the book focuses more on commitment and overcoming obstacles with help from the nurturing love and encouragement of her ”new” family at a refugee youth hostel on Willesden Lane. The story is a chronicle of Lisa’s teenage years trying to achieve a degree of normalcy in a chaotic world.

The book is a true account of the author’s mother, who became a concert pianist. Geared toward a mature younger reader, the book would make a great gift.”

PAGE TURNER ONE gives this book 2 ½ Bookmarks out of 5 Bookmarks.
PAGE TURNER TWO gives this book 4 Bookmarks and adds that it is a “feel good book” and out of such complete horror, a beautiful story of love and survival emerges.

THE ENGLISH READER BOOK STUDY GROUP

Friday, October 12th, 2007

This new book study has just begun, so there is still time to join us and become excited with where our thoughts and conversations take us! We are meeting on the first Tuesday of every month. So, our next session will be November 6th, from 6:30 until 8:00PM, at our cozy back table. Feel free to bring your dinner with you, or stop by The Red Roaster. If wine is desired, feel free as the store is closed and the time is YOURS!

The next discussion will involve pages 1 through 23, including Greensleeves, but not Francis Bacon.

We do have books available!
