BANNED BOOKS WEEK, SEPTEMBER 29 ~ OCTOBER 5

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

Look for our display of “banned and challenged” books on our front yellow table. Also, use our “BookSense” link, on our website: www.anopenbookcolorado.com for more titles. What’s the difference between a Challenge and a Banning?

A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of those materials. Challenges do not simply involve a person expressing a point of view; rather, they are an attempt to remove material from the curriculum or library, thereby restricting the access of others. The positive message of Banned Books Week: Free People Read Freely is that due to the commitment of librarians, teachers, parents, students and other concerned citizens, most challenges are unsuccessful and most materials are retained in the school curriculum or library collection.

AN OPEN BOOK LLC SUPPORTS “THE BIG READ” IN WELD, the selection being: BLESS ME, ULTIMA, by Rudolfo Anaya.

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The NEA presents THE BIG READ in partnership with the Institute of Museum and library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment. Weld county has chosen BLESS ME, ULTIMA by Rudolfo Anaya. Stop by our front black table and find copies to buy, as well as material describing events and discussions, throughout Weld County involving Anaya’s lyrical and luminous BLESS ME, ULTIMA.

In regards to the BANNED BOOKS WEEK, high school students in Norwood, Colorado staged an all-day sit-in to protest the removal of BLESS ME, ULTIMA from a ninth grade English classroom. The book had been removed following parent complaints of profanity and “pagan content” (the book’s title character is an herbal healer). Bob Conder, superintendent of schools, confiscated two dozen copies of the novel and threw them in trash cans, then allowed a group of parents to retrieve the books and destroy them Conder later apologized, admitting he had never read the novel, which appears on first Lady Laura Bush’s “top ten” reading list for all ages.

Free Talk and Meditation, September 25th, Tuesday, 6:00 PM

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

From now on, on the last Tuesday of every month, Monk Kelsang Rinzin, from the Heruka Buddhist Center in Ft. Collins (www.meditateinfortcollins.org) will present a free talk and meditation. This month the topic will be “Dealing with Anger” and how anger damages our relationships, our reputation, and our health. Learn how to deal with our most harmful emotion.

AN OPEN BOOK LLC GIVES BACK! (thanks to all of you!)

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

This month a percentage of our profits will be given to LEANNA’S CLOSET, located at 1748 Greeley Mall Annex (right by Habitat for Humanity) www.weldwomensfund.org/leanna/.

The Mission of Leanna’s Closet is to provide clothing for low income and disadvantaged women who are presently working, or those planning to enter the workforce. The volunteers of this worthwhile organization desire to help each woman become the best she can be, and to show her ways of self-improvement which can make a difference in her life.

Leanna Anderson was a Greeley businesswoman and volunteer who always had the needs and success of women foremost in her heart. She always dressed in beautiful clothing and jewelry. After Leanna died, her family and friends discovered that there was not a community clothes closet for women who were trying to better themselves. With a grant from The Women’s Fund of Weld County, the doors opened on May 20, 2002.

For more information about Leanna’s Closet, or to find out more about vouchers, donating or volunteering, please contact: Michele Vetting, 970-339-5309.

“Chick Lit” (as described in the Rocky Mountain News) is….”Young women trying to find their way through a life of Blackberries, sipping on grande mocha lattes, all the while looking fabulous in their Manolos – this is chick literature, chick lit for short.” Sound interesting? You bet! Smile
